Abstract:
Background:
Sapir Academic College which is the largest public college in Israel serves a diverse adult population of many ethnicities and cultures. We have developed a technology-based course which has proved successful for adult students with learning limitations studying EAP English. The initiative came about after noticing that students with learning difficulties failed to succeed in a regular classroom. The program which enables students to fulfill their academic potential could be applied to international globalized populations.

Method:
Students are referred to the course by the Department of Special Needs on the basis of learning and/or physical disabilities. They are taught in small groups, take frequent breaks and use computer- assisted technology. Students have access to psychological services and the option of linking up with a peer- tutor. They are tested in the same manner as they study: with the aid of a computer, extra time and a teacher available to answer questions and help with student needs.

Results:
Participants experienced an improvement in their success rate. They earned credit and were able to fulfill the curriculum requirement of the college due to the attenuations made. Most students completed the course and went on to receive their B.A. degree.

An Innovative Learning Center was christened this year for the benefit of students with special learning and physical needs. The center was developed to the highest standards of technology, accessibility, and environmental esthetics. It is staffed by psychologists and counselors who use individualized programs and monitor progress.

Future Development:
Statistical data has been compiled to assess factors of success. We are currently writing the research paper and it will be completed in late August. This experience is surely worthy of global application and examination.
