Abstract:
Blockchain is still an emerging technology as its patterns and variations are constantly evolving. This is mainly due to its unique features, such as decentralization, security, reliability, and data integrity. Regarding the adoption and application of this technology, little is known about its use and utilization in the educational process. In particular, current research shows that blockchain technology and its application in the educational process are constantly increasing. Current trends in educational blockchain research show that it is mainly used for data sharing, secure file management, and certified access control. However, there are still many possibilities for using blockchain in Education untapped. In particular, smart contracts could be used more, allowing the automation of processes within an educational blockchain platform. This article provides a systematic review that explores educational platforms/applications based on or using blockchain technology. The study focuses on two main stages: The first stage focuses on educational applications that have developed and/or successfully applied blockchain technology. The second stage presents the benefits that blockchain technology could potentially bring to the educational process. In conclusion, we argue that there is potential for greater use of blockchain technology and ample room for further progress in defining the optimal framework, technologies, and tools for blockchain applications in the field of Education.
