Abstract:
Nurses constitute the largest group among healthcare professionals. As in other countries, nursing care is becoming increasingly complex due to changes in healthcare and broader societal shifts, which have also impacted nursing education and clinical placements. High-quality nursing care necessitates ongoing acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and attitudes by nurses. NANDA (North American Nursing Diagnosis Association) is an organization that develops standardized nursing diagnoses for use in clinical practice and education. The adoption of NANDA nursing diagnoses in Estonia since 2007 has led to a substantial change in nurses' perceptions of their education based on nursing models over the past thirty years.

The study aims to analyze the foundation of nurses' education in nursing models over a period of thirty years from the perspective of the nurses themselves. This investigation forms part of a larger research project. The research employs a quantitative methodology, with longitudinal trends explored through successive cross-sectional studies. Data were gathered using an online questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics.

The studies were conducted in 1999, 2009, and 2021. A total of 832 individual participants were enrolled. The following individuals participated in the three consecutive studies: study I, n=463; study II, n=198; and study III, n=171. Eligible respondents were required to be nurses with at least one year of professional experience. In Study I, a mere 6% of respondents strongly agreed that their education was grounded in nursing models. In Study II, this figure rose to 15%, and by Study III, it reached 33%.

Over the past thirty years, nurses' perceptions of their education based on nursing models have undergone a remarkable transformation. The integration of NANDA nursing diagnoses into both hospital practice and educational curricula has contributed significantly to this development.
