Abstract:
In response to the need to provide systematic learning experiences in mental health counseling internships, a manual was developed by two instructors at Touro College in New York City. Since internships are structured programs designed to bridge the gap between course theory and organizational practices, it is essential for mental health counseling programs to establish systematic learning practices for internship placements. This instrument contains evidence-based goals, learning activities, and content-based reflection essays linked to the professional standards of the ACA Code of Ethics (2005), CACREP (2009), and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (2009). It is proposed that when these educational components are aligned with professional standards in internship settings, they have the potential to provide a comprehensive understanding of what knowledge, skills, and dispositions must be achieved to improve learning outcomes.
