Abstract:
With the invention of the integrated circuit, digitalization through the new industrial revolution has changed in direction of the digital world as we know it today. The word "virtual" is nowadays used for artificial objects, landscapes and workflows as well as whole worlds, built through computer systems. Building upon the fundamentals of courses in informatics and computer graphics and a specific students’ project, this paper describes ways of transferring sculptures, paintings and performances into augmented- as well as virtual-reality and back into other forms of art. It does not only describe the mere technological process but also shows the metamorphosis of an object from real- to virtual- and back to another form of representation as part of the the artist's creational process. Information on the artwork is quantified and stored as digital data. The abstraction of measurable facts has to be chosen in respect of extracting custom-specific information in return. An exhibition has proven that the mixture of a creative mind and technologies to digitize and display art can lead to a fertile combination.
