Abstract:
In this article we discuss the possibility of teaching preschoolers concepts that go beyond traditional preschool math activities which involves learning about numbers, counting, quantities, matching, ordering, shapes, etc. Our approach shepherds preschoolers through the process of problem solving and mathematical reasoning through active learning. We show that using methods developed by L.G. Peterson the elements of elementary linear equations can be introduced to three-, four- , and five-year-olds. The approach is based on helping children make sense of mathematics by virtue of the use of logical thinking and understanding the concepts of “sum” and “difference”. Children learn to draw conclusions as they actively do mathematics with known facts and models to gradually extend their ability to reason. The results of the trial that took place in a Preschool Learning Center are also presented.
