Abstract:
The preschool age is essential to the development of cognitive processes in children and the shaping of the basis of their systems of values. It is at that age that first evaluative orientations and the methods of evaluation are formed; it is when the child adopts original norms, patterns and ideals of behavior. Actions taken at the preschool stage introduce the child into the world of values (teaching values) by their discovery, assimilation and realization in its everyday life. Social competence is the starting point for interpersonal relations and enable proper functioning of child in its peer group. For that reason, the essential skill a child should acquire in the initial years of its education is the understanding of the rules of conduct and norms of behavior generally acceptable in the society she or he lives and is brought up in.

The primary objective of preschool education is child development. It is perceived holistically, in all personality layers, and the task of the preschool is to stimulate and direct it.

In each of said personality strata, changes occur largely as a result of the transfer of values from various sources. Amongst them, the key position is occupied by the very kindergarten.

On the basis of the analysis of "Kindergarten core curriculum standards" one may indicate the values which mark out the direction of work with children. They comprise, amongst other things: happiness, health, safety, world discovery, culture, tradition, activity, independence, creativity, the feeling of causation and creation, warmth, kindliness, respect, meeting with another man, good, truth, love, and beauty.

These and other values are, clearly, universal values. It is due to the fact that preschool as an institution established to bring up and educate children needs to, at the same time, assure that said values are preserved in the society and mould children's development in accordance therewith.
The article demonstrates research regarding the world of values of preschool children.
