Abstract:
The present is characterized by continuous development and increasing international cooperation in individual fields of science, research, technology and production. The mutual exchange of information, knowledge and experience, especially between specialists, takes place through specialized communication. Therefore, a significant emphasis is placed on the ability to master the terminology of a specific field in both the mother tongue and a foreign language. This fact is reflected in the curricula of subjects taught at non-philological universities, which focus on the acquisition and implementation of specialized vocabulary in practice. Undoubtedly, one of the effective tools for acquiring and mastering specialized vocabulary in the process of foreign language teaching and learning is the use of foreign language university textbooks. The current situation often leads to the cooperation of specialized subject teachers and linguists, as today's market does not offer foreign language professional literature in adequate quantity and quality for all fields of interest. A similar situation can be observed concerning the study programs offered at the Department of Pedology and Geology of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (SUA). For this reason, a cooperation between the Department of Pedology and Geology and the Centre of Languages of the SUA in Nitra was established within the project KEGA 013SPU-4/2021 "Preparation of Soil Science Terminology of Equivalent Slovak and English Terms and Their Applicability in the Scientific-pedagogical Process". One of the outputs of the project is an English textbook on Soil Science, which is based on the latest knowledge in this field. It is primarily intended for Slovak and foreign students, but also for teachers, scientific workers and other professional public. The aim of the paper is to bring closer the importance of cooperation of specialized subject teachers and linguists in the creation of the mentioned textbook. We will present in more detail difficulties and challenges that we had to overcome and solve in connection with the selection, determination and assigning of suitable English equivalents to Slovak terms from the field of soil science.
