Abstract:
The teaching profession in the United States faces a growing kink in its workforce pipeline, driven not only by declining enrollment in teacher preparation programs but also by widespread reductions in the perceptions of prestige, status, and esteem associated with teaching. Drawing on Hoyle’s framework of semantic status and Lortie’s apprenticeship of observation, this study examines how educators’ perceptions of esteem, prestige, and status shape their willingness to encourage others to enter the profession. Survey data from 3,840 members of Education Minnesota reveal low to moderate levels of perceived prestige, status, and esteem, along with notable workforce instability, as nearly half of respondents reported considering leaving their current positions and more than one third expressed hesitancy about recommending teaching as a career. Factor analysis confirmed a three-factor structure of semantic status, and hierarchical linear regression showed that teachers’ intent to remain, together with their perceptions of esteem and prestige, were the strongest predictors of encouraging others to pursue teaching. Experienced teachers and educators working in urban settings reported the lowest levels of esteem and prestige, demonstrating adverse influences on the teacher pipeline. The findings underscore the importance of the everyday observations students make of their teachers, which shape early impressions of the profession and contribute to the constriction of the teacher pipeline. Enhancing teachers’ professional esteem and prestige may simultaneously strengthen retention and increase positive advocacy for the profession, addressing a critical barrier to bringing in the next generation of teachers. Keywords:
