Abstract:
Educators want and require opportunities to develop professionally and improve their understanding and practice of teaching students to read. These opportunities fall under the auspices of informed best practices in literacy instruction, such as the science of teaching reading (STR). Professional development opportunities must be available for educators to evaluate, apply, and question curriculum. Teaching reading effectively, especially to students who are struggling, requires considerable knowledge and skill. The purpose of this research investigation is to identify in-service educators’ perceptions, understandings, and experiences with The Apple Group Connections: OG in 3D® learning to read curriculum as an effective tool for teaching literacy. This curriculum adheres to the principle of a multisensory, structured language approach that is fully aligned with the science of teaching reading. For teachers to successfully teach literacy, they must be fully prepared to apply and evaluate an effective curriculum.
