In the modern world, proficiency in English is considered an inalienable and essential component of professional competence. This suggests high level of linguistic competence and comprises the ability to use grammatically correct forms and syntactic constructions, to understand the semantic segments in speech, organized in accordance with existing rules and norms of a foreign language. A linguistic competence is a constituent element of a communicative competence. Successful verbal communication is impossible without stronger vocabulary, a good command of grammar rules and sense-group structuring.

The article analyses the place and role of such writing activities as rendering and essay in the process of learning the active vocabulary and its consolidation, justifies the importance of their incorporation in the foreign language training activities.

The subject of the research is various types of vocabulary revision and actualization exercises in writing.

The purpose of the research is to find the most efficient and instrumental way of monitoring and estimating the level of active vocabulary adoption.

The methods applied are the following: the method of studying and summarizing various theoretical calculations and regulations, descriptive statistics, comparative and correlation analyses.

The authors come to the conclusion that such forms of written assessment as rendering and essay, when incorporated into multicomponent system of knowledge and competence evaluation, help students to actualize their previously acquired subject-oriented vocabulary on the systematic basis, give a boost to deeper adoption of target language, cultivate creativity, provide further individualization in the foreign language training activities.
