Abstract:
The gifted students are the people who have an exceptional ability and the temperament more than others in the fields which are treated as valuable in their society. For decades, lots of researches have been accomplished about developments of curriculum for gifted students on mathematics and science. However, in order to achieve the educational goal of information science fields such as creative problem-solving skill, an appropriate choice of teaching method is important as well as the curriculum of each course.

In this research, we suggest a new computer science teaching model focused on student activities for the scientifically gifted students. When we perform the education of gifted and talented students, two of the most difficult things are how we can maintain the students’ interest whole the time and how we can draw and maximize the student’s potentiality. To solve these problems, we placed the center of class on the student-led activities. Before the class, a teacher provides the goal of lesson and materials related to the subject. And then the teacher asks for students to get into groups and study the contents in groups. In the class, group members share and extend their knowledge. After that step, every student presents the result. Finally, students discuss how they apply the knowledge to solve real-life problems. We design various kinds of grouping skills, presentation styles and evaluation systems for the purpose of the maintenance of student’s interests.

We applied our model on “Data structures and algorithms” course. According to the survey, the students could improve their computational thinking ability, creativity problem solving skill, communication skill as well as the knowledge of data structure and algorithm course.
