Abstract:

Doctoral studies represent the highest level of academic training and serve as a foundation for knowledge creation, innovation, and societal advancement. Despite their value, PhD programs are associated with high attrition rates globally, with estimates ranging between 33% and 70%. This paper examines the essential characteristics that contribute to robust doctoral studies and high-quality dissertations. Focusing on key components—student attributes, supervisor expertise, supervisory relationships, availability and expectations, supervision practices, and socialization—the paper highlights how these factors collectively influence doctoral success. Two illustrative cases demonstrate the effects of supportive and deficient supervisory environments. The findings underscore the importance of holistic doctoral training that integrates academic, relational, and institutional elements.
