DEVELOPING A LEARNING UNIT IN LIGHT OF THE INTEGRATION BETWEEN THE MATHEMATICAL PROFICIENCY AND THE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS

Abstract:
This study aims to build a model based on the integration between mathematical proficiency and the 21st-century skills to develop a mathematics curriculum in the primary school in the King do of Saudi Arabia. Also, to develop a learning unit relying on the proposed model. In addition, it aims to investigate the effectiveness of this unit on the students’ learning, perceptions about it and its reflections on them. The qualitative approach was used in this study. The research used a variety of learning materials, such as the proposed model, teacher’s guide, exercises booklets, and learning program. The research used three different instruments which are, interviews, participant’s observation, and teacher’s diary. The research sample was 22 grade, 4 students. The study lasts for six weeks. It found that the students’ learning mathematics become more permanent, their self-efficiency has been increased, and they become valuing mathematic.

The research recommends that activities, statistics and images of the surrounding environment of the student should be included in the educational system and considering students’ needs and interests. Also, training teachers to design activities that consider the mathematical proficiency and 21st-century skills. Then, allowing the teachers and students to participate in the development of mathematics curricula.
