Abstract:
Multilingual and cultural diversity skills are viewed as a communicative proficiency that is necessary for people to fully function in 21st century learning. The Emma Project is responding to this challenge through provision of an Automatic Transcription Translation System thanks to the expertise of the Universitat Politècnica of Valencia. This workshop looks at some of the issues and challenges involved in multilingual and cultural translation and provides insights into how machines can be trained to translate “better”. There is a comparative analysis of general-purpose translation machine transcription and translation systems with in-domain systems like UPV and with human translations, and a practical session introduces participants to the embedded UPV transcription and translation systems on EMMA.
