In an era where Artificial Intelligence offers students the promise of effortless knowledge, educators face the challenge of teaching not just the utility of these tools, but the profound, unseen consequences of their use. Drawing on Rumi’s metaphor of the "speaker and the unspoken," this presentation explores a novel pedagogical approach to introducing AI to Gen Z students. It frames AI as a dual force: a powerful "speaker" providing instant answers, and an "unspoken" entity with vast implications for our cognitive functions and environmental ecosystems.

Set within an Operations Management course for engineering students, this case study details a paradigm shift in first-day engagement. Abandoning the traditional syllabus overview, the introductory session immediately positioned AI as a new, complex participant in the classroom dynamic. Students were confronted with empirical data revealing the hidden costs of AI reliance, including MRI studies linking over-dependence on AI writing to patterns resembling cognitive decline. Furthermore, the abstract environmental impact of AI was made tangible by scaling the energy, water, and CO2 consumption of their daily prompts to the classroom level, transforming abstract tech usage into a critical lesson in sustainable development.

Coupled with interactive polling to contrast students' career priorities with current industry data, this transparent, data-driven methodology improved a high level of critical engagement. The presentation will demonstrate how shifting the pedagogical focus from "working more" to "working smarter" empowers students to use AI as a modern astrolabe—a navigational tool that enhances efficiency while sustaining a strong connection to their personal drive, environmental responsibility, and long-term well-being.
