Abstract:
Academics and educators in various countries are increasingly highlighting the need to rethink the paradigms of civic education for pupils in light of the current challenges of a changing global reality. This article explores a new approach to the civic education of pupils in Lithuania. This new approach is based on the understanding that contemporary challenges and opportunities require not only traditional but also new competencies and skills from pupils. There is a need to change traditional teaching methods to promote pupils' active civic participation to function effectively in a democratic society.

The article presents a new approach to civic education for Lithuanian pupils (1st-4th grade of gymnasium) and discusses challenges and opportunities. A project was launched in 2023, and a cooperation agreement was signed between the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania (MAL) and three gymnasiums, highlighting the importance of civic awareness and responsibility education in order to develop active and civic-minded members of society. It is a four-year Curriculum aimed at promoting pupils' active participation in solving real societal problems, fostering their critical thinking, their ability to analyse information, and strengthening their physical fitness.

The Curriculum consists of two blocks: formal and non-formal education. The formal education block, which consists of three subjects - Foundations of Citizenship, Moral Education and Physical Education - is in line with the requirements of the Lithuanian General Curriculum. Leadership skills education is part of the non-formal education block. The pupils who come to MAL twice weekly for training are called 'Young Cadets-Leaders ' (YCL). They are taught and trained by MAL's lecturers and trainers. YCL learn theory and have practical activities such as project work, museum visits, sites of national historical importance, events, and social activities. All these activities develop pupils' cooperation and leadership skills, which are essential in the modern world.

Lecturers and instructors received further training in pedagogy, didactic and educational psychology at an accredited institution for the professional development of teachers and educational support professionals. Implementing the Curriculum has created new challenges that, if analysed and overcome, will help improve and its implementation process.

To summarize the project's experience, the synergy between the MAL and the gymnasiums is positive. This can lead to closer cooperation between schools, universities, and governmental institutions in teaching pupil’s values and responsibility and developing civil society in Lithuania.
