Abstract:
The Russian Federation is divided into regions and macro-regions. Nowadays there are 8 macro-regions in Russia. Each macro-region can be characterized by a certain orientation of its functioning and development. For example, the Ural macro-region is industrial. Therefore, the issues of the engineer higher education in so actual in this macro-region.
In modern conditions we note that the universities of the Ural macro-region are significantly differentiated in terms of material and technical base, personnel composition, intellectual potential of students. The typology of universities will make it possible to distinguish different types of them, according to the criteria corresponding to the tasks of the industrial macro-region. Therefore, we will be able to identify groups of universities with similar characteristics; identify the problem areas of each group; give an assessment of universities that conduct engineering and technical training in the Ural macro-region.
The object of the article are the universities of the Ural macro-region. The subject is the typology of the universities that conduct engineering and technical training in the Ural macro-region. The goal is to make a typology of the universities that would characterize higher engineering and technical education in the Ural macro-region.
The methodological basis of the article are the theories of the system, network, and typological analysis and various typologies of universities that exist in the modern foreign and Russian science. The empirical base of the article includes the statistics data of 53 universities in the Ural macro-region and the results of a semi-formalized in-depth interview (N = 30) with experts in higher education. The typology of the universities conducting engineering and technical training was proposed on the basis of the hierarchical cluster analysis.
As a conclusions of the article the author makes some notes: 1) there are four groups of universities in the Ural macro-region: universities, where there is no engineering and technical training; universities with basic engineering education; universities with high quality engineering education; universities with general engineering education; 2) the study showed that engineering and technical training is conducted in more than half of the universities of the Ural macro-region; 3) in the group of universities where the largest share of students is trained in the engineering and technical areas, we didn’t record the highest level of material and technical support; 4) universities, where a high proportion of the engineering and technical students is combined with high level of the material and technical base; 5) in general, the results of this research reflects the situation in the higher education of the Ural macro-region, when the largest resources are concentrated point-to-point, in status or narrowly specialized universities, while the bulk of universities are funded by the residual principle.
