Abstract:
The teacher largely determines the quality of competencies formed in students. Hence, teacher’s self-presentation and image are integrative components of the educational process. Of particular importance are the qualities of the personality of an English teacher, since the latter produces continuous communication.
The study was aimed at revealing the possible contradictions in the image represented by a university teacher and their mental image formed by the first year students and their impact on the quality of educational interaction in the classroom. The scrutiny could be interpreted as a description of the EFL teacher role in the current situation.
The study involved 27 teachers and 325 students from three Russian universities. At the first study, participanting teachers were asked to fill out a questionnaire aimed at the perception of their own image in the eyes of students. At the second stage, participanting students were asked to describe the potential impact of the ‘teacher’ image on students and the educational process (regardless of the specific teacher). Students also indicated the qualities of personality, which, in their opinion, should have a perfect teacher. At the third stage, a comparison of the teacher’s self-perception of his / her image and its real broadcast in the audience was implemented.
The research method was the discourse analysis and the statistics data analysis and its interpretation; the cognitive study, discourse texts’ linguistic analysis proper to identify the communicative strategies and speech tactics and moves. To generalize, classify and interpret the results observed the descriptive method was used. In addition, there were used elements of contextual and quantitative methods of analysis and also scientific methods of observation, generalization and comparison. As a result, the most common and effective metaphoric images were singled out and their choice analyzed. The study showed a correlation between the desire of the student to attend classes on a particular subject and the personality of the teacher, conducting the classes. Further research is intended to highlight the impact of distant vs ‘first among equals’ teacher-student relations on the motivation of students to learning activities. Keywords:
