Abstract:
Currently, various reforms of the education system are underway in Slovakia, which change quite often. Mathematics takes a back seat, as social science subjects and the teaching of foreign languages are among the priorities. These reforms are also reflected in the low quality of knowledge of students who enter Slovak universities of a technical and natural science nature. Some, already published, research points out that the success of completing the studies is related to the students' entry level knowledge when they arrive at the university. It is on the basis of these researches that we decided to examine the level of entry level knowledge of students in mathematics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical University in Košice, where mathematics is taught in the first year of the bachelor's study program.
The aim of the research was to find out if there is a relationship between students' entry level knowledge acquired in high school and success in mastering mathematics in the first semester of bachelor's studies. The research was conducted in the form of a test with 10 mathematical tasks focused on various areas of high school mathematics. 146 respondents took part in the research. Based on research, we were able to evaluate the need for an introductory course in mathematics at our university and at the same time create a list of basic concepts and skills leading to successful graduation, which we present at the end of the article.
