Abstract:
Relevance:
Kazakh National Medical university (KazNMU) within the framework of the Bologna process has introduced a new approach in the evaluation of students. Evaluation is done according to 5 competencies. The answer for the question “How does this model work?” is one of the indexes of effectiveness of the Credit system introduced in KazNMU.
Purpose:
To elucidate the objectivity of the new evaluation system by students’ opinion.
Methods:
Questionnaire consists of 12 questions directed to the elucidation of students’ opinion about the competency approach in their evaluation. A total 21 students of the second course, general medicine major participated in the research.
Results:
The analysis of questionnaires revealed the following results: the effectiveness of the introduced approach is 5.26 (out of 10, where 10 is maximum); in most cases the mark for knowledge competence is duplicated and put for other competencies; students are partially satisfied by the work of teachers according to this approach; fundamental departments of medicine work best by the system; some students haven’t understood how the system influences the objectivity in putting of marks.
Conclusion:
The results showed imperfections of the system: students don’t completely understand it and, not all teachers and departments work properly. These results suggest the system needs to be improved. As only 21 students were involved in research it should be considered as pilot project.
