Abstract:
Multimedia resources can be employed to involve and integrate various disciplines in a positive learning experience. As teachers of Portuguese and Digital Video, we planned a project that could involve students of both classes.
According to our observations, students frequently assumed that a production process of a multimedia project was as simple as having access to the equipment and defining what to film.
The first goal of the project is to work with basic skills and develop them along the process to give students tools to actually experience the creation of a short movie. Students would learn about narration, camera movements and techniques, use of appropriate equipment and software.
In Portuguese, as a pre-production step, students will be exposed to kinds of narratives, gaining an understanding of the differences between a narrative in the cinema and in the literature. They will read a selection of short stories written by Brazilian authors and they will be asked to adapt these stories to a screenplay. The final product will be an adapted script to be used in Multimedia classes.
Digital Video’s main objective in this project is to go over the production and post-production process with students focusing on filming techniques and editing, teaching how to properly manage time and equipment when working on a multimedia project.
The project gives opportunities for the authors of the adapted scrips to actually film it and finalize the process, if they are enrolled in Digital Video. Another possibility is to have their stories directed and filmed by another student in Digital Video class.
The overall objective of this project is to provide students with a deeper knowledge of basic areas and encourage them to transfer this knowledge to be able to effectively communicate through technologies available.
