Parents have a role to play in their childrens' upbringing and an influence on their academic performance besides providing the basic neccesities. This study sought to find out the role of parenthood on the learners' academic achievement motivation.Specifically, the study investigated the socio economic and psychological factors which influence academic achievement motivation. The study was based on Abraham Maslow"s theory ofhierachy of needs. This theory lays emphasis on fullfillment of basic needs before academic excellence. It also emphasizes on modelling as a neccesary recipe for sex role development of children in a family.Albert Bandura's social learning theory was also used in examining the role of modeling in academic achievement motivation. The research design was ex-post -Facto.Random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were uesd to select the schools and actual participants respectively. The main research instruments used in the study ewre aBiographical Form and an Academic Academic Achievement test both developed by the researcher. The Biographical elicited information on the respondents' age, gender, class, position in the last terminal examination, the parental marrital status and whether this affected thei=eir learning.Data analysis was done using SPSS programme where coded data generated descriptives which ewre then subjected to inferentials mainly the one way ANOVA and the t-test to compare the variables. The results it is hoped will be of help to all education stakeholders.
