Abstract:
COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed education systems worldwide. The sudden shift to online learning demonstrated that we cannot ignore the impact of the global risk society on education, nor can we take the future of education for granted.

In this paper the authors discuss the future of education and the role of online learning in post-pandemic times. They present an overview of the results obtained in two waves of research conducted in 2021 on a sample of 82 language teachers and 800 undergraduate students of professional studies in Croatia using the survey method and the online survey technique and aiming to get insight into online teaching, assessment, and grading.

The results of the research point to the complexity of online learning and its challenges, advantages and limitations, seen from the perspectives of both teachers and students. Insights into the experience contribute strategically to shaping the education processes according to the needs of both students and teachers and to implementing digital technologies in education. Whereas most other research deal with COVID-19 impact on education in general, this research encompasses the aspects of adoption and efficiency of technology in education, i.e., how the education system responded to the challenges of the pandemic.
