Abstract:
New communication technologies and intelligent environments are changing the way we work and design buildings. The use of innovative technologies have transformed the way we approach and design interior spaces and buildings. There is increasing emphasis to integrate technology, sustainable design and collaboration into curriculum. In the built environment, collaboration in global sustainability require individuals to work together from initial project conceptualization to the culmination of an integrated design because each team member possesses a necessary and unique area of expertise.

In preparation for an initial and ongoing accreditation from the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the program faculty has elected to teach students the implications of conducting the practice of design in a world context. A goal was to teach students to investigate and write on contemporary issues affecting interior design and the social, political, and physical influences affecting historical changes in design of the built environment.

In response, third year Interior Design students engaged in an inquiry based studio exercise chosen to increase critical thinking and reinforce curriculum concepts. Students were required to analyze the interior environment based on a case study of an international sustainable project. The exercise focused on awareness of international technology, how it affects design as well as its possible impact on the global community. Key areas examined included use of technology, energy conservation, lighting controls, security and compliance. Pros and cons within the building were identified and discussed. Students were encouraged to question and reflect based on the analysis. The resulting student experience reinforced information disseminated in class as well as promoted evaluative and critical thinking skills.
