Abstract:
Collaborative learning is a key component of effective distance education, yet its implementation is often hampered by limited interaction within Learning Management Systems (LMS). While LMS platforms provide a structured environment for content delivery and assessment, they often lack the speed and social presence needed to sustain dynamic group discussions. This issue reduces student engagement and undermines the effectiveness of collaborative learning. To address these challenges, this study developed an integration model between WhatsApp and an LMS in online tutorials implemented at Universitas Terbuka (UT). WhatsApp—widely adopted by students due to its accessibility, real-time messaging, and ease of media sharing—offers communication advantages that complement LMS functionality. However, when used separately from an LMS, WhatsApp interactions are not recorded in the formal learning system. This leads to fragmented communication and difficulties in monitoring student participation. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach, this study designed and implemented an Application Programming Interface (API) that enables two-way synchronization of messages delivered via WhatsApp and the LMS. Messages delivered in WhatsApp group discussions can automatically appear in the LMS discussion forum. Meanwhile, LMS announcements and discussions can also be accessed within the WhatsApp group. This integration maintains the spontaneity and responsiveness of WhatsApp communication while ensuring that learning interactions remain documented and accessible to both students and tutors. Initial testing with students demonstrated increased communication frequency, faster coordination on group assignments, and a stronger sense of connectedness among students. Tutors also reported an improved ability to monitor student participation in discussion forums and follow the progress of discussions. This integrated model reduces platform switching and supports a more seamless collaborative learning process. Findings indicate that integrating WhatsApp with an LMS increases interactions, strengthens student engagement, and improves the overall effectiveness of online collaborative learning. This model provides a practical and scalable framework for institutions seeking to enrich their digital learning environments with more interactive and user-friendly communication tools.Keywords:
