Abstract:
In the article, results of the data analysis are presented; the data were collected from the transcripted audio-records of 31 lessons of literary education at four lower secondary schools in the Czech Republic. Lessons of literary education were recorded from December 2013 until May 2014. The whole data corpus covers 1,400 minutes of audio-records, 630 pages of transcript and 70 pages of notes written down during the lesson observations. For the purpose of this research, selected parts of transcript were exploited which deal with teachers´ efforts towards motivating learners to listening to/reading the works of poetry and thinking about characteristics of the language, topic and structure of the work. The analysis of the learning content, teachers´ and learners´ reactions and teacher – learner interactions enabled us to monitor some situations how the work with poetry is conducted. The results show it is closely connected with the activities running in the class at that time.

The activities lead us to discovering various layers and elements of the texts which are reflected in various strategies exploited by the teachers, particularly focused on:
(1) attracting learners´ attention and targeting it to the selected texts (i.e. to reading /reciting and listening to the poetry),
(2) providing incentives to re-reading of the texts
(3) discussing their structure (functions of selected elements in the structure and their impression on the readers).
