Abstract:
Conducting an applied science research project can present a significant challenge, especially when attempting to involve high school and university students with the aim of initiating their training as researchers. The mentor responsible for guiding these students must have a well-structured project that allows for the development of all the basic steps of the scientific method, applied to obtaining a result with a sense of applicability and significant societal impact.

As part of the Pacific Summer of Scientific and Technological Research program sponsored by the DELFIN program, students from three different universities and high schools were received with the purpose of integrating them into the project "Generation of Probability Maps of Ash Impact on Airspace around the Popocatépetl Volcano." Over seven weeks, the students were guided to achieve the objectives of data acquisition, information processing using specialized software, graphical representation of the results, and the creation of thematic maps that show the areas around the Popocatépetl Volcano with a high probability of being affected in case of an eruption, depending on the time of year.
