INTEGRATING SUBJECTS THROUGH PROJECT-BASED LEARNING METHODOLOGIES: A NOVEL ACADEMIC MODEL IN THE DEGREE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY AT UNIVERSIDAD EUROPEA

Abstract:
In the last decades, educational changes are focused on students as the center of the learning process. At the Degree in Biotechnology at Universidad Europea we have developed an innovative Academic Model based on Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach. The main purpose of this method is to facilitate students to work on active methodologies and to engage them in solving real professional problems. Students have to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by working on real biotechnological processes. In this context, they acquire deeper knowledge by developing their critical capacity and creativity. We have tackled the challenge of integrating activities in different subjects to develop PBL methodologies in three different years (2nd, 3rd and 4th year), ranging from setting a classical biotechnological process like beer brewing, to research or design new biotechnological developments. Each project increases in complexity, fostering students´ freedom and self-thinking as they promote to higher years along the degree.

During the second year, the students learn the process of alcoholic fermentation through the classical brewing process, creating a craft brewery company. With this aim, they perform activities in three different subjects (Microbiology, Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering and Strategic Management) to design, elaborate and commercialize a new brand of craft beer. At the third year, students approach a multidisciplinary project that involves five subjects during the academic year (Molecular Genetic Engineering, Bioinformatics, Functional Genomics and Proteomics, Protein Chemistry and Engineering and Advanced Instrumental Techniques). The objective of this Research-Based Learning project is the production and characterization of an enzyme with potential industrial interest, where students must integrate and apply theoretical concepts into real scientific research. Finally, in their fourth and last year students are requested to find an innovative solution to a real problem presented by a simulated Biotech Company, with activities included in three different subjects (Biotechnological Processes and Products, Bioreactors and Commercial Management).

This Academic Model aims to help the students to acquire the professional skills they must achieve during their undergraduate studies through a series of interconnected active methodologies. This approach, that allows students to work on any real project, can improve their understanding of their future profession, making them more competitive in their careers. The final goal of these integrated activities included in our innovative Academic Model is to provide our students with the highest qualifications and the abilities that are currently demanded in the biotechnology job market.
