Abstract:
INTRODUCTION
The e-learning platforms are some of the resources of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that the majority of Spanish universities offer to their faculties to promote teaching and learning process. However, not all teachers make use of such platforms; the fear of the unknown, lack of time, lack of information and resistance to use other support tools are some of the reasons that make its use is not widespread (Cebrian, 2003).
OBJECTIVE
The objective was to analyze the current use of e-learning platform Moodle by students, to support the teaching process of Degree in Sports Science. The aim was to find specific strategies designed to promote its use and maximize the application of existing resources.
PROCEDURE
In order to increase familiarity and experience in the use of this platform a series of actions were carried out to improve knowledge and provide ongoing support to teachers. The work was divided into three phases:
a) Initial stage: in which information was provided to teachers regarding the use of Moodle.
b) Stage of development: They were conducted a series of activities to familiarize and increase the level of knowledge about the possibilities of the platform as briefings, analysis of the current situation and development of seminars. Also, digital materials were created for each specific subject and was facilitated a permanent faculty support with the help of fellow staff assigned to the project.
c) Evaluation phase: preparation and analysis of a questionnaire to verify that objectives were achieved.
The questionnaire contained questions drawn regarding the degree of participation of teachers in the use of the platform, what subjects are being implemented, what use was being given and what existing resources were being used. Also it was asked about the factors that determine their use, which were the limitations and the financial support needed for their familiarity and use. Finally, it was asked about knowledge and use of OCW resources.
RESULTS
The results showed that students used the Moodle platform in the 97% of the subjects in the Sports Science degree. To analyze the results of the surveys SPSS was used. The results were analyzed by gender, course and age of the students. Information is expected to result in improving teacher quality, a greater use by students of the resources of the subjects and more efficient access to these resources, and the findings will serve to map out concrete strategies for improving the use and exploitation of ICT.
