THE INFLUENCE OF STUDENT'S COGNITIVE STYLE ON THEIR MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MALAYSIA

Abstract:
The main aims of this study was to find the influence of student's cognitive style on their mathematics achievement among primary school students. Sample of this study consisted of 395 students from selected primary school in Selangor and Perak (Malaysia). The students were selected from standard 3, 4, 5 and 6. In data collection, researcher used ‘Group Embedded Figures Tests’ (GEFT) by Witkin and Goodenough (1977) which was translated and revised. From data collected, researcher were able to identify student's cognitive style that is either 'Field Independent' (FI) or 'Field Dependent' (FD). After that data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic to see the influence of student's cognitive style on their mathematics achievement. Findings of this study showed that there were significant influences of student's cognitive style on their mathematics achievement. Implication of the study was that teacher have to identify their students' cognitive style and teach them according to approach that suitable with their cognitive style in order to enhance the students mathematics achievement.
