Abstract:
Slovakia is a dubbing country. However, subtitles are becoming more and more popular even in our context, especially among younger viewers, including university students. Based on their own experience with subtitles, they are quite familiar with the topic and can identify some of the most problematic aspects of the transfer. That is why subtitling training seems to be very attractive not only for future translators but also for teacher training or any other foreign language program students.
The main objective of the proposed paper is to introduce possible advantages (and disadvantages) of subtitles making within university training. The issue is approached from the point of view of a teacher, the author, based on her own experience. It is also described from the point of view of students (25 participants) who participated in such subtitling assignments between English and Slovak. The opinions of students were collected based on in-class discussions, translation analyses, and a short questionnaire. The greatest advantages lie in developing linguistic and (inter-)cultural competencies, the ability to work with all levels of audiovisual works, and in encouraging students' creativity. Keywords:
