Abstract:
The need of developing intercultural competence is being increasingly recognized by educational and non-educational staff worldwide. Therefore, the creation of techniques to assess whether or not educators maintain the necessary intercultural competence is of a paramount importance.

Studying Greece’s intercultural matters in education represents a priority, because 10-15% of the students’ population is of non-Greek origin. Researches have shown that educators seem not being competent enough to deal with classroom diversity.

This paper, firstly addresses the question of “why the assessment of intercultural competence is important”. In this context, basic definitions and foundations regarding intercultural education and intercultural competence of educators are outlined. Secondly, a wide range of intercultural assessment tools is analyzed and a framework for the development of an assessment tool is proposed. Thirdly, an assessment package is presented, which is based on field and desk research and tested by educators in Greece, current and future (university students).

As school dıversıty gradually becomes a significant educational ıssue with global impact, the results of thıs study will contrıbute to the research of ıntercultural assessment, both at European and global level.
