Abstract:
This paper serves as a proposal to AB, an aerospace and defense company, articulating the critical need for, and the benefits of, implementing 'The Vertical Program' — a targeted workplace learning initiative designed to elevate diversity in STEM leadership. The proposal synthesizes evidence of systemic barriers that have historically hindered minority representation in leadership roles within STEM fields and argues for adopting innovative workplace learning as a transformative solution. 'The Vertical Program' is proposed as a strategic experiential learning framework within AB, aimed at equipping minority employees with the diverse skill sets and experiences necessary for ascending into leadership positions. By facilitating rotational opportunities across different functions, the program is designed to offer hands-on learning and leadership development tailored to the unique challenges faced by minorities in STEM. Drawing upon successful models from corporations like AT&T and Morgan Stanley highlights the efficacy and feasibility of such programs in fostering leadership diversity and contributing to a more inclusive and dynamic organizational culture. The proposal highlights the potential benefits of 'The Vertical Program,' including enhanced career growth for minority employees, a more diverse leadership team, and the promotion of an equitable workplace environment. Furthermore, this contributes to the broader discussion on diversity in STEM leadership by providing a detailed, evidence-based rationale for the necessity of such programs. It underscores the role of workplace learning in breaking down systemic barriers and advocates for its implementation as a critical strategy in achieving long-term organizational change. The proposal for 'The Vertical Program' at AB is presented as a supported strategy for advancing diversity in STEM leadership. Also, it serves as a call to action for the STEM industry at large to recognize and utilize the power of workplace learning in creating a more diverse, inclusive, and effective leadership structure.
