Abstract:
In an online course there is a variety of tools and materials geared to the student in order to achieve the best learning on the subject of study. However, they have the disadvantage of not having the presence of a professor to count on his experience in solving real problems. For engineering courses online this situation limits the understanding of concepts in which the engineering professor's experience is essential. One solution is to incorporate reasoning modules in the course which represent and use the knowledge of experts in a particular field, this alternative can be generated through the development of web based expert systems. This paper presents a study on the potential applications of web based expert systems in online courses. It also presents the design of an online engineering course on failure analysis of metallic mechanical elements which incorporates an expert module developed on this topic.
