Abstract:
Using a grounded theory qualitative design approach, intent of this study was to inspire and provoke researchers to examine the complexity of women of color (WOC) in seeking leadership positions. The purpose of this study was to explore all aspects of leadership attainment through the lived experiences of WOC and the impact of intersectionality on leadership attainment through examining supports and/or barriers for WOC as they sought leadership positons. The study involved 13 WOC participants who were either seeking or had sought leadership positions. Participants were interviewed using a 13 question interview guide. With informed consent, all participants were audio taped to ensure reliability and validity of transcribed responses. Questions were developed and piloted to glean the personal experiences WOC as related to seeking leadership positions. Through the 13 interviews, the researcher investigated complexities and explored the:
(a) presence of assumptions and/or stereotypes,
(b) opportunities to assume and retain leadership positions, and
(c) opportunities for WOC to access WOC mentors.

Furthermore, the study highlighted the developing research in the field of leadership as it relates to WOC in seeking and attaining leadership roles. The review of literature and study results exposed a dearth of literature in this area and obstacles encountered by WOC as they sought leadership positions. Finally, study results revealed strategies for organizations, and in particular educational organizations, to support WOC in their career and leadership development.
