Abstract:
Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the creative digital industries — spanning animation, games, visual effects (VFX), virtual production, and extended reality (XR) — at a pace that outstrips the capacity of education and training systems to respond. AI tools are no longer confined to back-end technical processes; they are now embedded across the entire creative value chain, from early ideation and pre-visualisation to production, distribution, and audience engagement. This transformation generates urgent and complex demands for higher education (HE) and vocational education and training (VET) institutions, which must not only integrate new technologies into curricula, but fundamentally reconsider what it means to educate creative professionals for an AI-driven world.

This paper examines the structural challenges and pedagogical opportunities that AI integration presents for creative digital education in Europe. Drawing on a synthesis of recent European and international research — including findings from the AVENUE (2025) and PANEURAMA (2025) industry reports, the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report (2025), OECD Skills for the AI Economy (2024), and a quantitative survey of over 120 educators, students, and industry professionals conducted in late 2025 — the paper argues that effective AI integration in creative digital education requires a dual transformation: one that is simultaneously technological and deeply human.
