Abstract:
Problem solving issues related to road traffic management are based on many variables, some known and some random ones. Behind traffic optimization are mathematical forecasting models based on: extrapolation, weighted type; operational; based on the preferential, scholastic balance method.

These models start from simplistic hypotheses that most often do not accurately reflect the real situation of traffic. Because of this, the most complex models used in the present are computer-aided simulation. Their advantage is that they can consider a much greater amount of variables and may more accurately reflect the actual situation, for example, traffic flow dynamics in urban networks. In this case, urban traffic models are simulated and analyzed with the Synchro Studio software.

The paper presents the use of an urban road traffic simulation model using a software product, to increase the understanding of the theoretical notions by the students from the study program Transport and Traffic Engineering.

Traffic simulation based on Google Maps and Synchro Studio gives a much clear picture of the real situation of artery geometry, traffic and delay time. This, combined with the simulation of moving vehicles by 2D or 3D animation produces a far greater impact on the understanding of the issues to be solved.

Nowadays, simulation models are part of computer-assisted learning and thus they are an important guide both to students and lifelong learning. Classical learning combined with simulation models as an interactive tool is the best way to provide a kind of virtual reality in education.
We can think that a model is appropiate if it is accompanied by theoretical notions, demonstration materials, spreadsheets, as well as user guides or tutorials for using the software for students.

Maximizing the efficiency of the learning process, while keeping students involved, is the common goal that teachers hope to achieve in any course. In the field of road traffic, the courses, based on mathematics, modeling and simulation applications help to achieve a balance between theory and reality, bringing students from simplified concepts towards complex ones.

This makes it the perfect tools to introduce yourself or your students to the principles of simulation modern approaches.
