Abstract:
This project, “Informed Citizenship: Bridging the Knowledge Gap,” explores a communitarian service-learning initiative aimed at combating religious prejudice and enhancing cultural competency within a Faith-Based Independent School and a Navy College. The methodology involved purposive sampling of participants who could be influenced by media portrayals of Muslims, including middle school students and Navy College instructors. In the service-learning project’s methodology, the data collection phase was integral to evaluating its impact. Following the educational presentations at both Faith-Based Independent School (FIS) and Navy College (NC), assessment sessions were held where participants could engage in meaningful dialogue, ask questions, and offer feedback. This feedback was gathered using sticky notes, providing tangible insights into the participants’ understanding and perspectives. Results indicated increased awareness and open-mindedness among participants, with feedback highlighting the educational impact and desire for further engagement. The Informed Citizenship project demonstrated that service-learning programs integrating service with academic learning foster the skills to address complex social issues. It highlighted the importance of active participation in democratic citizenship, especially in solving problems that affect minority communities like Muslims in the U.S. The conclusion emphasizes the role of service-learning in promoting cultural competence and active citizenship, recommending its integration into educational frameworks to foster diversity appreciation and societal cohesion. This educational approach, grounded in students’ experiences, aims to develop cultural knowledge and appreciation for different perspectives. Ultimately, it positions educational institutions to lead in overcoming ignorance and biases, promoting proactive engagement with minority communities.
