Abstract:
Faculty as Mentors and Coaches - International Student and Faculty Experiences is presenting a qualitative study highlighting the students and mentors as they go through a guided mentoring and coaching program for students in medical school and their views of the faculty as their advisors, mentors and coaches. The goal of the presentation is to inform the audience about the results of the study and how it informs the research about the role of faculty in the students' college journey. The faculty have the role of advisors, guides, mentors and coaches. They are the ones motivating the students, coaching them in the steps needed to take to be successful in students’ academic journey as well as their personal life. As international students go through their college experience, they encounter different faculty and they are either assigned a faculty advisor or they search on their own for a professional academic advisers, for a specialists in the medical field or in a specialty of interest, a researcher in a lab where they perform their studies, the different disciplines faculty advisers, the different departments mentors, the career counselors, all of these people become sources of knowledge and skills to guide students. The experiences of international students, as they go through different mentoring connections, were designed and implemented for college students pursuing medical school. The students’ experiences are reported in this qualitative research study with focus on faculty and their roles as advisors, coaches and mentors. Implications for student support are discussed. The presentation of this research study is going to cover an overview of terminology, literature review highlighting the main studies, the methodology used (population, survey, data collection and data analysis), the results with a summary of findings. The presentation will conclude with future recommendations for research, questions and answers for audience.
