Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for architecture students to gain hands-on experience in construction. Despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic, engaging in practical construction activities is vital for students to understand the complexities of the field. Virtual platforms cannot replicate the tangible interactions and problem-solving skills gained through physical involvement. Construction experience allows students to comprehend materials, methods, and challenges, strengthening the connection between theory and practice. Additionally, it fosters collaboration with professionals and appreciation for the industry's collaborative nature. In the post-pandemic era, this practical engagement becomes even more critical as design considerations evolve. By actively participating in construction projects, students contribute to innovative solutions that address emerging challenges. Furthermore, hands-on experience enhances communication and leadership skills necessary for project management and client interactions. Despite the pandemic, architecture students must strive for hands-on construction experience to bridge the gap between theory and practice, deepen their understanding of craft and construction, and develop essential community connections and skills for their future careers. This presentation will provide case studies undertaken by students and how each explicitly addresses the aforementioned post-pandemic benefits of design-build work. Keywords:
