Abstract:
The article is based on teachers´ experience in the Czech Republic. Teaching German as a foreign language has had a long-standing history in that country. That long-time tradition broke off after the World War Two. The country became a state of the so called Eastern Block, the schools in the Czech Republic started teaching the Russian language. The given state of education lasted until the year 1989. After that date, the country has become a member of the European Union and almost all Czech schools stopped teaching Russian and started teaching English. That language has become a compulsory foreign language.
Mentioning shortly the tradition and current situation of teaching the German language in the Czech Republic the article deals with strategy in teaching that foreign language as not a compulsory subject on the higher grade of primary school. Much attention is given to memorizing a short list of new words and to practicing them in order to ensure the retention of them. Toward the end of the paper also some learning strategies concerning new vocabulary are mentioned in a form of an taxative outline. Keywords:
