Abstract:
This paper explored the value of using up-to-date online news as authentic materials in an EFL course in Taiwan. Thirty-four college students, majored in Applied Foreign Languages, enrolled in a course titled Current Event News. Data were collected through final reflections and face-to-face interviews. Students’ attitude towards using online news to learn English was greatly positive. They found that learning English through these selected and reliable websites not only improved their English proficiency but also broadened their horizon in many aspects. Some pedagogical suggestions are provided for English instructors to use online authentic materials in EFL courses.
