Abstract:
In the realm of mathematics education, fostering creativity and critical thinking skills is essential for preparing students to tackle real-world challenges. This paper explores an innovative way through an assignment to promote creativity, engagement, and practical application of theoretical concepts within an online Discrete Mathematics course.
Introduction:
We create an assignment, titled "Applied Problem Solving" which tasks students with utilizing problem-solving techniques learned in class to address practical applications. This approach aims to empower students by providing them with the opportunity to explore and apply mathematical principles beyond the traditional scope of textbook examples. By encouraging students to propose problems in diverse contexts, the assignment fosters a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts while nurturing creativity and independent thinking.
Specifically, each week, each student is tasked with selecting a problem-solving technique covered in class and the weekly reading, and applying it to a novel scenario or a real-life situation. The student then initiates a discussion thread by presenting the proposed problem. Once the proposal deadline passes, each student selects a problem to solve. The proposer of each problem monitors his/her discussion thread to ensure that the peer problem solver is progressing appropriately. This process not only reinforces comprehension of course material but also challenges students to think critically and creatively about how mathematical principles can be utilized in various contexts. The assignment emphasizes the importance of practical application, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world problem-solving skills.
Central to the success of this assignment is the utilization of an electronic discussion board, which serves as a platform for students to share their proposed problems and engage in collaborative problem-solving. By making student-generated problems visible to the entire class, the discussion board facilitates peer learning and exposes students to diverse applications. This collaborative environment encourages active participation and fosters a sense of community among students, enhancing the overall learning experience.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the "Applied Problem Solving" assignment represents an innovative approach to mathematics education, empowering students to become creative problem proposers and solvers capable of applying theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. By fostering creativity, engagement, and collaboration, this assignment not only enhances students' understanding of Discrete Mathematics but also equips them with invaluable skills for success both within academia and in broader life pursuits. Keywords:
