Abstract:
The aim of literary education can be characterised as the development of the student's ability to understand the text, interpret it, and focus on important facts. This ability enables the student to think critically, as well as to analyse, synthesise, and evaluate literary text. The improvement of teaching at the tertiary level of education requires the analysis of students' skills. It is very important to focus on the research in their habits, as well as the ability to work with the text. The study identifies the current state of future teachers' attitudes towards active reading strategies concerning American literature and culture educational learning experience. The research deals with the practical experience of future English language teachers in implementing physical active reading strategies while reading a text. Summing up, the study focuses on the relationship between active reading strategies and literary education at the tertiary level. The research involved the non-native English language and literature students preparing for the role of teachers of English as a foreign language at the lower and upper secondary levels of education. The paper analyses the data from questionnaires filled in by English language students (bachelor's degree). The questionnaire consisted of fifteen statements concerning physical active reading strategies and a seven-point Likert rating scale. The choice of respondents was carried out as a selection of compact groups. The research referred to a low level of implementation of physical active reading strategies while reading a text. The obtained results do not differ significantly from previous studies. In this context, there is a need for continuous development of students' metacognitive skills, as well as their awareness of physical active reading strategies during the seminars in American literature. This research will contribute to the innovation of Future Teachers' Literary Education.
