Abstract:
This qualitative study explores the advantages and disadvantages of learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in an immersive virtual metaverse. Through semi-structured interviews, a participant observer's journal, and thematic analysis, the study investigates the impact of the virtual learning environment on language proficiency, motivation, engagement, and perceived skill development of 161 EFL learners. Participants reported improvements in fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, attributed to the immersive and interactive nature of the virtual environment. Gamified tasks, teacher presence, and embodied avatar experiences increased learners' motivation, engagement, and confidence in speaking the target language. However, technical difficulties, cognitive overload, and synchronous learning challenges were found to hinder participation, disrupt learning activities, and cause frustration among learners. The study highlights the importance of providing technological support, training, and guidance to help learners and teachers navigate the virtual learning environment effectively.
