Abstract:
First year Biology taught by professors from the Department of Biology in the Marine and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Oenology, and Biotechnology Degrees at the University of Cadiz includes in the curriculum a series of topics that, although expanded and from other points of view, have already been partially addressed during high school. This means that, in some cases, students are confident and do not devote all the time and effort necessary to exceed. On the other hand, the media seems to be increasingly echoing science news, which denotes the scope and concern of some issues in today's society, mainly those related to health.

In the teaching innovation project carried out, the aim was to connect the course’s subject matter with the news appearing in the media. In addition, the project demonstrated that students are able to evaluate their classmates in an appropriate and objective manner. This interaction between peers, working in teams, preparing an exhibition and presenting it in public, enhances the skills that they need to become future professionals. It has also served as additional training to the theoretical content of the subject matter, as it was emphasized that the information could be evaluated.
