Abstract:

Although countless research studies have examined the clinical nurse preceptor (CNP) and the nursing student relationship, there is no formal framework available for CNP selection. Oftentimes the only recognized requirement for CNP selection is the length of time that the CNP has been a nurse. Moreover, due to the difficulty of recruiting registered nurses into the role of CNP, clinical practice experiences could be overshadowed by the CNPs readiness and willingness to preceptor. The purpose of this doctoral study was to develop a preceptor competency assessment tool to assist nurse managers in their selection of competent preceptors. While the development of the tool was the intent of the study, strong evidence gathered through nine focus group sessions with CNPs, nursing faculty, and nursing students, essential preceptor qualities that were critical to the nursing student’s success in the preceptorship were identified. While the preceptor competency data gathered from the focus group cohorts shared significant similarities, the characteristics noted within the themes were marginally different. The results from the focus group sessions will be discussed by the researcher, highlighting important considerations when preceptorship experiences are being arranged for nursing students. Although the focus of the research was on clinical nurse preceptors, the data results could easily transfer to any program where preceptorships are utilized.
