Abstract:
A new educational program was developed for students to address global competency, social innovation, and entrepreneurship skills in pressing global issues. As part of the program, a multi-faceted approach is used, incorporating guided learning, cultural engagement, and independent exploration experiences to encourage the development of well-rounded individuals capable of driving positive change on a global scale.

The core of this interdisciplinary course revolved around preparing students to be effective changemakers. By integrating the best practices of social innovation and entrepreneurship, participants gained practical skills and insights into global challenges to develop meaningful solutions. A unique feature of the program was its ability to accommodate a wide range of interests, enabling students to explore challenges in areas such as education, economic development, sustainability, international business, psychology, and social entrepreneurship.

One key aspect of the program was the emphasis on systemic change and sustainable improvements. Through guest lectures, assigned readings, and experiential learning, students engaged with real-world issues, delving into the complexities of their chosen arenas. This hands-on approach instilled a deep understanding of the challenges and encouraged innovative thinking to develop sustainable solutions. Guest lectures by experts in relevant fields provided valuable insights and diverse perspectives, enriching students' understanding of global issues as witnessed with visits to places like Wakelyn Organic Farm, one of the most diverse Agroforestry sites in the world, the Edinburgh Remakery, an environmental, social enterprise with a vision to create a culture of sustainable, waste-free living to protect the planet, and Solsgirth Home Farm whose mission is to foster biodiversity while linking food with people. These experiences included practical projects, collaborative initiatives, and on-the-ground interventions.

The program's overarching goal was to equip students with critical knowledge, skills, and resources for leading change. Beyond the academic setting, students were encouraged to apply their learning to effect positive transformations in local communities, schools, and globally. This community and global impact component reinforced the importance of social responsibility and actively contributed to developing a new generation of engaged and proactive citizens.

In summary, our program introduced education for sustainability that goes beyond traditional learning approaches. By combining guided learning, cultural engagement, and independent exploration with a focus on interdisciplinary, real-world problem-solving, the program cultivated individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also capable of driving systemic change and sustainable improvements in diverse fields.
