Abstract:
The UK-based Science Hunters programme utilises a well-established approach that introduces Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topics through dialogic and practical interactive activities, then facilitates children’s exploration of those topics through experimentation in Minecraft. The Science Hunters: Space Missions in Minecraft project brings together specialists from the Science Hunters (University of the West of England) and RAL Space (Science and Technology Facilities Council) teams to collaborate to develop a series of six sessions based around space missions and the work of RAL Space, highlighting their specialists and facilities including the James Webb Space Telescope, the Ariel mission, space engineering and test facilities. While delivery is targeted at ages 7-14 years, it is flexible and adaptable to the needs, stage and requirements of the participants. The sessions also specifically aim to reach children from under-represented groups, with a particular focus on children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, those in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, Looked After Children and children in rural areas.

Themed Minecraft building challenges relating to real-world scenarios, contextualised through a learner-centred approach, support children from under-represented backgrounds to explore topics, build upon their existing knowledge, actively engage, and develop their understanding. Minecraft-based explorations are anchored to topic introductions including dialogic discussion and practical activities, with children then constructively exploring the theme through self-directed, scaffolded building in the popular, familiar game. Content is developed and delivered collaboratively between Science Hunters and RAL Space, including to schools, community groups and at public events including those hosted by RAL Space.

Five key outcomes are evaluated, centred on audiences:
(1) feeling inspired by astronomy, solar and planetary science, people and facilities;
(2) feeling STEM is relevant to their lives;
(3) seeking further opportunities to engage with STEM; and teachers and community group leaders
(4) feeling their expertise and priorities shape the activities delivered and
(5) developing skills and confidence in engaging others with astronomy, solar and planetary science and technology.
